The Gift

Writer's picture: David WarrenDavid Warren

John 14: 27 “I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid. 28 Remember what I told you: I am going away, but I will come back to you again. If you really loved me, you would be happy that I am going to the Father, who is greater than I am. 29 I have told you these things before they happen so that when they do happen, you will believe. 30 “I don’t have much more time to talk to you, because the ruler of this world approaches. He has no power over me, 31 but I will do what the Father requires of me, so that the world will know that I love the Father. Come, let’s be going.

In the above verses, Jesus leaves us a gift, and that gift is peace of mind and heart. Peace is not a peace this world can give us, so it is finely tuned for those who know Jesus, and we should live in that peace without being troubled or afraid. Jesus was going to leave His disciples, but the promised Holy Spirit would be accessible for all believers as though Jesus Himself were here. Jesus also says something that explains a little about Him and the Father, and in verse 28, He says, "The Father is greater than He is." Once again, Jesus is in charge of the narrative, and He tells His disciples all of this before it even happens. We also see that Jesus explains to them that the ruler of this world has no power over Him.

The power to live our lives in peace and strength regardless of circumstances is not something we think might be a part of our lives but a promise because Jesus is the King of kings.

Jesus did what was required to pay our sin debt and be made right with God. The gift Jesus has left with us is real and lasting, and we can bank on it. Real peace that is beyond our total comprehension. Paul described this peace in Philippians 4:Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. It is a gift from Jesus to His sheep, and we can be thankful for this gift and live on its power. Guard the gift and the gift will guard you.
